Major General Sir Howard Elphinstone VC KCB CMG CB - Royal Engineers


The first announcement of which Crimean War veterans had been selected to receive the new award for gallantry, the Victoria Cross, was made in the London Gazettes of 24th February 1857, 5th May 1857 and 23rd June 1857, 25 September 1857, 20 November 1857, 2 June 1858, 26 October 1858 and 6 May 1859.

The first investiture of the Victoria Cross, made in person by Queen Victoria, was held in Hyde Park, London, on Friday, 26th June 1857. Further investitures were made at later dates in Great Britain and around the world.
