The Victoria Cross and campaign medals awarded to Lieutenant Colonel Frederick Augustus Smith, 43rd ( Monmouthshire ) Regiment have been acquired at a Spink auction by the Lord Ashcroft VC Collection. The Spink sale hammer price realised £40,000 and the VC group has gone on display in the Imperial War Museum's Lord Ashcroft Gallery.


For the award of the Victoria Cross

[ London Gazette, 18 November 1864 ], Tauranga, New Zealand, 21 June 1864, Captain Frederick Augustus Smith, 43rd ( Monmouthshire ) Regiment.

For his distinguished conduct during the engagement at Tauranga, on the 21st of June 1864. He is stated to have led on his company in the most gallant manner at the attack on the Maories’ position, and although wounded previously to reaching the Rifle Pits, to have jumped down into them, where he commenced a hand to hand encounter with the Enemy, thereby giving his men great encouragement, and setting them a fine example.

Frederick Smith's Victoria Cross was sent to him by registered post.


Frederick Smith died in Breely, Co Meath, on the 22 July 1887 and was buried in St Cianans Churchyard, Duleek, Co Meath.
