The Victoria Cross and Crimea campaign medal awarded to Captain Joseph Malone, 13th Light Dragoons ( later 13th Hussars ) have been acquired by the Lord Ashcroft VC Collection from the 13th / 18th Royal Hussars Museum. The Joseph Malone Victoria Cross group had previously been purchased by the Regimental Museum in 1972.

The Lord Ashcroft VC Collection now owns two of the 'Charge of the Light Brigade' Victoria Crosses - the Samuel Parkes Cross for the Charge and the Joseph Malone Cross for the retreat.


For the award of the Victoria Cross

[ London Gazette, 25 September 1857 ], Balaclava, Crimea, 25 October 1854, Sergeant Joseph Malone, 13th Light Dragoons.

For having stopped under a very heavy fire to take charge of Captain Webb, 17th Lancers, until others arrived to assist him in recovering that Officer, who was ( as it afterwards proved ) mortally wounded. Serjeant Malone performed this act of bravery while returning on foot from the charge at the battle of Balaklava, in which his horse had been shot.

Joseph Malone was invested with his Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle, on the 21st November 1857.


Joseph Malone died on the 28th June 1883 at Pinetown, Natal, South Africa, and is buried in St. Andrew's Churchyard, Pinetown.
