THE HEADSTONE OVER THE GRAVE OF MAJOR FRANCIS FARQUHARSON VC IN ST ANDREW'S CHURCHYARD, HARBERTON, DEVONSHIRE, HAS BEEN RESTORED.

The Victoria Cross Trust has been busy recently in restoring the graves of holders of the Victoria Cross on the Isle of Wight and one grave in the county of Devonshire. This was the burial plot of Major Francis Edward Farquharson VC, 42nd Regiment ( The Black Watch ), in St Andrew's Churchyard, Harberton.

For the award of the Victoria Cross

[ London Gazette, 21 June 1859 ], Lucknow, Indian Mutiny, 9 March 1858, Lieutenant Francis Edward Farquharson, 42nd Regiment ( The Black Watch )

For conspicuous bravery, when engaged before Lucknow, on the 9th March 1858, in having led a portion of his Company, stormed a bastion mounting two guns, and spiked the guns, by which the advanced position, held during the night of the 9th of March, was rendered secure from the fire of Artillery.

Lieutenant Farquharson was severely wounded, while holding an advanced position, on the morning of 10th of March.


Francis Farquharson was invested with his Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle on the 4th January 1860.
